Historycal Background

The Modern Age is that literary movement that goes from 1914 to 1945. During this period, many important events characterized the American History and influenced the poets and the writers.

Events:

World War I began with the assassination of Archduke F.Ferdinand in 1914. The United States became involved in 1917, by declaring war to Germany. The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles, signed by Germany in 1918.

The roaring '20s:
  • flappers- young girls who had a new style and beahviors that didn't follow the traditional idea of women
  •  jazz music - it originated in the Southern states and it was played by African Americans
  • Harlem Renaissance - African American cultural movement, that originated in Harlem, NY

The Great Depression - severe decline in American activity, started by the crash of the Stock Market on October 29, 1929

World War II (1940-1945) entered by the US in 1941, after the surprise bombing at Pearl Harbor
